La Landriana Gardens: History & Visit near Rome

The Gardens of La Landriana extend over more than 10 hectares within a large estate on the Lazio coast, in Tor San Lorenzo, in the municipality of Ardea, approximately 35 km south of Rome.

The history of the gardens began in 1956, when the Marchese Gallarati-Scotti and his wife, Lavinia Taverna, acquired a rural property that was still largely devoid of vegetation. Lavinia, driven by her passion for gardening, gradually transformed it into an extraordinary collection of plants. In 1967, she invited the renowned English landscape designer Russell Page, who gave the gardens their distinctive structure, organizing them into a succession of geometric spaces and enclosed “garden rooms.” In the following years, Lavinia Taverna continued to expand and modify the design, creating new areas and botanical collections according to her own sensibility, deeply influenced by Page’s vision.

One of the most fascinating features of La Landriana is precisely this division into “garden rooms”, each with its own distinctive botanical and landscape character: the Valley of Old Roses, the Orange Garden, the White Avenue, the Olive Garden, the Blue Lawn, the Spanish Pool, the Heather Garden, the Grey Garden, the Taxodium Lake, and many other areas waiting to be discovered.

The botanical richness of the gardens provides a succession of blooms and colours throughout the year. In spring, roses, daffodils, tulips, magnolias, and ornamental cherry trees are among the highlights; during the summer, the gardens are enlivened by the colours of plumbago, daturas, passion flowers, and hibiscus, while other botanical collections continue to add colour and interest in the following months. The variety of species and the distinctive arrangement of the garden rooms make La Landriana an attractive destination in every season.

For many years, the Gardens of La Landriana have also hosted “Spring at La Landriana” and “Autumn at La Landriana”, established garden fairs bringing together specialist nurseries, botanical collections, and gardening enthusiasts.
